The Kerrville Police Department is currently accepting applications for its Fall 2019 Citizen Police Academy, August 15 through November 7, 2019, 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm Thursday evenings.
The Citizen Police Academy is a twelve-week program designed to give the public a working knowledge of the Kerrville Police Department. Each class consists of twelve consecutive Thursday night classes at City of Kerrville facilities. The instruction is comprehensive and each week separate areas of the department are covered.
Community-Based Policing, Support Services, Communications / 911, Field Operations, School-Based Policing, Field Arrests / Use of Force, Ethics and Police Officers, Internal Affairs, Special Operations Unit (SWAT), Negotiations, Traffic Enforcement / Investigations, Building Searches, Gangs, Drugs, Criminal Investigations Unit, Crime Scene Investigations / Evidence Collection, Recruitment / Hiring / Training, CPA Alumni are examples of topics that are covered. Instruction consists of lectures, demonstrations, tours, and riding with a police officer on a shift.
The slogan of the Citizen Police Academy is “Building Trust, Bridging Gaps”. The goal is to educate the public about the Kerrville Police Department and to increase the rapport between the citizens and police officers.
“We hope the graduates of the Citizen Police Academy become more aware and better informed about how the Police Department operates, and will encourage friends, coworkers and families to join the Kerrville Police Department in this rewarding program,” said a press release from KPD.
