KERRVILLE — The Kerrville Police Department is warning residents to check all large denomination bills to make sure they aren’t counterfeit.
“Feel the paper, look for the security features such as color shifting in on the denomination in the lower right-hand corner, and check for the watermark and security strip, which are visible when the bill is held up to the light,” said a Monday afternoon press release.
According to KPD, the bogus bills being passed off in Kerrville and have been taken as evidence are marked with Chinese characters on both sides.
Police say that Chinese bank clerks use it to help them learn how to count and identify authentic American currency that often comes their way due to being passed or exchanged by business and leisure travelers to their country.
KPD says that the counterfeit money is available to buy on internet sites.
If anyone isn’t sure of a bill’s legitimacy, they should contact the Kerrville Police Department at 830-257-8181
