HARRIS COUNTY – An alleged drunk driving incident left one road crew member deceased when a driver who entered a construction area struck him, according to the Harris County Precinct 8 Constable’s Office.
It was reported by the Constable’s Office that deputies with Constable Phil Sandlin’s office responded to a fatal traffic accident on July 31 at around 11:00 a.m. in the 5300 block of State Highway 146 southbound near Port Road.
When deputies arrived, they learned that a black 2016 Dodge van veered onto the shoulder of the highway which resulted in the 50-year-old victim being struck, said authorities.
The crew member was pronounced deceased on the scene. His identity was not disclosed pending notification of his family.
The driver of the Dodge van, identified by officials as Travis Nicholas Stevens, 25, of Houston, sustained non-life threatening injuries and was taken to Clear Lake Regional Hospital for treatment.
It was determined, based on the evidence collected through an on-scene investigation by the Harris County District Attorney’s Office Vehicular Crimes Division that Stevens may have been driving while intoxicated.
The charges against Stevens were accepted as Intoxication Manslaughter.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the gentleman killed in this tragic incident as well as his friends and family,” said Jason Finnen, Chief Deputy Harris County Precinct 8 Constable’s Office.
