HARRIS COUNTY – Today, Tuesday, July 23rd, Maurice Mitchell, age 62, arrested for recklessly causing serious bodily injury or death to a child. Mitchell was arrested by Houston Police early Tuesday morning, he was indicted on the charges on Friday, July 19th, which is a second-degree felony.

The 3-year-old boy, Raymond “R.J.” Pryer Jr, died on July 19th, 2018 after being trapped in the daycare’s buss for several hours following a class field trip to Doss Park.

According to the indictment, Mitchell disconnected a passenger safety alarm, a safeguard to prevent young passengers from being left behind on the bus, without first performing a visual inspection of the bus to guarantee no children were left onboard.

“As the summer heat intensifies, we should honor R.J.’s memory by ensuring no more children are left in hot vehicles,” Assistant District Attorney Michele Oncken said. “Remember that Texas can be deadly.”

The case is being handled and prosecuted by the Child Fatality Unit of Harris County District Attorney’s Office and was investigated by Crimes Against Children Unit of the Houston Police Department.

A memorial bench for RJ is being unveiled on Saturday, July 27th at Doss Park.
