NBPD says both zebras that escaped on Wednesday have died after being returned to owner

UPDATE – New details have been released by the New Braunfels Police Department stating that both of the zebras that escaped on Wednesday, August 7 at about 4:45 p.m. have died.

The New Braunfels Police Department said that the second zebra they were searching for was accounted for and penned Wednesday evening but apparently the escaped again sometime on Thursday morning while the first zebra that was captured died on Wednesday evening.

“The zebras had been sold to a property owner off of Hwy 46 South earlier in the day, and they had somehow escaped the property and swam across the Guadalupe River,” said NBPD. “One of the zebras then remained in that immediate area while the other began making its way down a number of busy New Braunfels streets.”

Police said that the zebra that was captured first had made its way down Seguin Avenue, underneath I-35, Castell Avenue, Bus. 35, Walnut Avenue, the I-35 frontage road, and Loop 337 before being contained.

When the animal eventually slowed down in an area of Loop 337 and West San Antonio Street, a helicopter team manned by the original owners of the animal arrived and together with NBPD, they spent about an hour and a half attempting to corral the zebra safely so it could be tranquilized.

Once the zebra was successfully sedated, it was harnessed and transported to the original owners.

NBPD reported that the zebra, unfortunately, died sometime after it was returned to its owners.

Officers were informed of the second zebra’s escape at approximately 10:40 a.m. on Thursday, August 8, and, assisted by Animal Control officers, a search began around the area. During the search, the animal was found on the property outside of its pen, deceased.

UPDATE – The loose zebra was safely tranquilized and carefully recovered, according to the New Braunfels Police Department. The zebra was transported back to the ranch where it was raised, added NBPD.

“We understand that the zebra got loose by swimming across the Guadalupe River and then making a run for it across the city,” said officials.

It was added that a second zebra also escaped and is still missing.

Anyone who sees the zebra is asked to contact the New Braunfels Police Department at 830-221-4100.

NEW BRAUNFELS – A zebra is currently on the loose in New Braunfels in the N. Grape Avenue area and the New Braunfels Police Department and Animal Control officers Re attempting to corral the animal.

NBPD reported that the zebra somehow got loose this afternoon and has been making it’s way across the city.

“Officers have eyes on the zebra and are currently developing a plan to bring the animal to safety,” said NBPD.

An update was given by NBPD stating that the zebra is not from the Snake Farm and they are being assisted by a helicopter team specializing in safely trapping animals.

This is a developing story.
