18-wheeler catches fire in 8-vehicle accident in Temple, 14 people involved

TEMPLE – An 18-wheeler caught on fire after the driver crashed while traveling south on I-35 in Temple which caused a major accident involving a second 18-wheeler and six other vehicles on Sunday afternoon.

The accident happened on July 21 at approximately 1:40 p.m. near Mile Marker 301 and Nugent Avenue.

According to officials, fourteen people were involved in the accident and two were taken to area hospitals for evaluation.

While emergency crews worked the scene, traffic was shut down on South I-35 and traffic traveling north I-35 near the scene was rerouted onto the service road.

“Due to damage to interstate barriers, traffic is expected to be delayed for hours. Seek alternate routes and avoid I-35 through Temple,” said the Temple Police Department during the cleanup process.

The tractor-trailer was reportedly carrying non-hazardous cargo but Grones Environmental responded to the scene to assist with hazardous material clean up.

Responders at the scene included Temple Fire & Rescue, the Texas Department of Public Safety, the Texas Department of Transportation, the Temple Police Department, Temple EMS, and PSC.
